History of Mindrolling and Introduction to Kama
Og Min Ogyen Mindrolling, the Place of Ripening and Liberation, is one of the six main monasteries of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in Tibet in1676 by the great master Chögyal Terdag Lingpa, Mindrolling became renowned as a center where the complete teachings of the Buddhadharma were upheld with the utmost authenticity and purity in an unbroken lineage of transmission. The leadership of the monastery has always been held by the descendants of Chögyal Terdag Lingpa, who have ensured that the teachings, empowerments, and accomplishments have been passed purely and completely from generation to generation. Since its founding, Mindrolling has been the main seat dedicated to ensuring the continuity of the profound Kama and Terma transmissions and to safeguarding the pure stream of the precious Dharma.
Mindrolling Monastery was re-established in India in 1965, when the 11th Mindrolling Trichen took his seat again as the head of the Monastery. Re-establishing the monastery after the invasion of Tibet was an incredibly important task that was only possible due the incredible effort and vision of Kyabje Khochhen Rinpoche, Kyabje Dzongnang Rinpoche and a small group of dedicated monks and practitioners. Here, the vast tradition of study, practice, and realization is carried forward to this day. Monastic education, great rituals and ceremonies (drubchen), retreats, and the training of new generations of practitioners, all continue in their authentic form.
The importance of Mindrolling to the continuity of the authentic transmissions of the Nyingma Lineage has continued at Mindrolling in India. At Mindrolling, many important transmissions have been bestowed to each generation of monks, nuns, and lay practitioners by the greatest Nyingma masters with the purest lines of transmission including Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Kyabje Trulzhig Rinpoche, and Kyabje Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche.
The Kama Transmissions, or Oral Lineage of Transmissions, are the treasury of teachings and practices of the Nyingma school passed down in an unbroken chain from the time of the Buddha from master to disciple. Preserved with the utmost care at Mindrolling, the Kama contains the profound transmissions which are the very life-force of the Dharma. These transmissions are exceedingly rare to encounter, and their continuity ensures that Buddhadharma remains pure, continuous, and free of any degradation.
In this auspicious Diamond Jubilee year, marking sixty years since the founding of Mindrolling Monastery in India, the precious Kama transmissions, the very lifeblood of the Nyingma lineage, will be bestowed at Mindrolling Monastery by Kyabje Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche. These transmissions have been completely organized and fully supported by Kyabje Minling Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche, the 12th generation of the Mindrolling Lineage, and the Mindrolling Monastery.
Last bestowed at Mindrolling in 1996 by Kyabje Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche, these profound and rare transmissions now joyfully return at this moment of celebration, uniting past, present, and future. To gather at Mindrolling and receive the Kama in this sacred year is an inconceivable blessing—an opportunity as rare as it is precious, ensuring the pure continuity of the Buddhadharma and carrying its liberating power into the hearts of beings for generations to come.
